As an avid reader of the M/M gay erotic romance genre, (I read 3 or 4 books a week), while I enjoy most of the books in this genre, occassionally I read one that blows my socks off. This is one of those books. This book appears to be the first one in this genre by Kate Ashwood, but I pray it is not the last. Both of the principal characters, Evan and Bran, two very opposite people, are beautifully drawn up and become characters that the reader falls in love with rather quickly. Evan, who at age 18, is a virgin in all respects (he has not even ever kissed another person, male or female)leaves his horrible home and unpleasant little city in Idaho and travels to Portland Oregon on the day he graduates from high school. He has applied on line to be an adult model for a company that turns out to be making M/M gay porn. When he goes in for his interview he meets Bran and Lew and is required to get naked and masterbate for them and a live camera. With great reluctance he does so and is so hot that he is immediately hired. Lew heads the company and, unusually for this industry is a very ethical and caring man. Bran is the star performer of their videos and an assistant to Lew. Bran is approaching the age of 30, has been making sex tapes for 10 years and has become bored and jaded, never feeling anything for the men he has sex with, on or off camera. But when he meets Evan, he feels an immediate attraction, both emotionally and sexually toward him. Lew has Bran head up to a house that has been rented on the Oregon coast to film 7 guys, including both Bran and Evan, having sexual encounters while living together during a three week shoot. We meet the other five performers who, to Evan's surprise, are not only beautiful, but quite nice. What follows is some very hot sex, both before the cameras and in private, and a growing romance between Evan and Bran that is as hot as the sex. One of them makes a well intentioned but stupid mistake that creates a near tragic result for both of them. Is it resolved and do they get there HEA? Just the type of story I like to sit down too after a tough day. Shy young man/Older world wise guy - and lots of Pretty Woman moments make this one a winner for me. Added plus The sex was uber hot - way hotter than usual and it was very well described. I felt like a voyeur - and that's not even my kink!
Another reviewer said it best, that the instalove was both the best part of the story and the worst. It felt very harlequin romance novel - all it was missing was a hidden pregnancy (and a female lead of course) still it was cute, Evan and bran sympathetic, the sex hot. Colt was amazing and I hope he gets his own story. Overall a decent read.
It was OK. I loved the previous books in this series but this one was not up to the same standard unfortunately. Even though I read this most recently, I can't actually remember the characters or the story very well, but I can remember the previous books that I read months earlier. So that probably sums it up.
First of all there was a lot of sex and hot scenes. So if you like that, bonus. That said the love story/ plot was a bit much. Extremely syrupy. And again a bit much. But if you like romance or syrupy love then this is for you. It was well written. The author is a good writer. The setting was beautiful - the Oregon coast and that was enjoyable as well.
The first m/m romance I ever read - and still one of my favourites - was More than Make Believe by Tymber Dalton and the premise of this story is almost identical. Overall this was a solid 4 star read, good plot, good character development and hot, yet meaningful sex scenes. My one complaint was the "conflict" at the end seemed too minor and too contrived. Also, I would have loved to see a final sex scene, one away from the cameras. Overall very enjoyable though and I'm off to check out other works from this author.
Ok I can't say I didn't like the book.. It was very well written and I did feel connected to the characters ... Bran and Evan were good together... And u actually felt the love building between them... I also liked the secondary characters as well.. Especially Colt...
Now wit that being said I thought the reason for them not being together was kind of stupid.. I thought she could have given them some real conflict...the reason she did give was just weak to me... And after seeing how much they loved each other and you felt that love I'm just like why such a weak reason.. I won't go into details because I don't want to spoil the read... I will say read it and form your own opinion...
I love the story and the characters although it seems at time that the psychology of the young main character was almost as a naïve virgin girl would think of a first sexual experiences. Young men even teenagers are not taking such a long time to accept new sexual experiences even if they are challenging. On the other hand, it is very well written and the "actions" and scenario are good enough to distract from those small inaccuracies in young gay male sexuality. The "dominant" other gay character is also a bit idealised but again close enough to a real one to forgive the writer for those romanticising tricks. Giving four stars because I like it less a star for the discomfort of feeling it was almost written despite being gay soft porn like those "romantic novels" that my female friends love to read.
