First a disclaimer. Yes Dave is a good friend of mine and yes I hope his book sells well but let me assure you all that this is because I truly believe it is a wonderful addition to the vast sum of Anglo-american angling literature. .
Dave's collection of stories, mostly about trout fishing, explore the mood and wonder of fishing in the southern region of New Zealand. However it is not just the tales that will delight you but the quality of the prose. Dave's writing is consistently of a very high standard and his best pieces have a rare eloquence that capture the intimacy of small fly fishing in beautiful surroundings. The feel of the water, the beauty of mayflies and the camaraderie of an experience/adventure shared are all there, expressed with an elegance seldom if ever equaled. And truly is there anything else in a fly fishing book you could ask for?
First off, I'm not a great book reader, but this author had me riveted for chapter after chapter.... I live in the centre/east of the South Island of NZ and know of most of the locations Dave has described and fished at. There is no doubt that I will read this book again so, well done Dave, most entertaining and enjoyable. In todays 'gloom and doom' it was refreshing.
Whether you are a Fly Fishing nut or not, buy it, and enjoy a good read......
