Jan Simmons never expected trouble to move into her quiet Charming Way cul-de-sac. Nor did she expect her husband Jeff’s weakness for fast money to drag their once happy family into danger. When her husband turns to crime, Jan, a people-pleaser with little self-worth, must release the death grip she has on her failing marriage for the sake of her children and draw on her inner strength. This novel portrays the life of a suburban wife and mother whose once good marriage takes a wrong turn when her husband unknowingly makes a deal with gangsters. This story reminded me of the hit T.V. show, Desperate Housewives, in Jan’s camaraderie and drama with the neighbors on Charming Way as she struggles to leave her cheating, alcoholic husband. The story contains a strong Married To The Mob quality, less the comedic slapstick. The author succeeded in putting me in Jan’s shoes as she finds the courage to start her life over for her and her kids, through skillful writing and dialogue, which includes some sex and strong language. The ending was satisfying—in fact, I would be interested to see the next book start there!Product details

Hear Me Roar Joy Smith 9781509212965 Books Reviews
Hear me roar speaks to the reader on so many levels. It tells the story of a family torn apart by infidelity, drugs, alcohol, and the lies and deceit that goes with these addictions. It is heart wrenching to read about Jan's struggles to keep the family together, while trying to get a small business off the ground. This book really shows the struggles that family members of people face. It also highlights the intolerance towards these families.
I truly enjoyed this book. Hear me roar is a book that everyone should read. It was well writtten and had me hooked from the beginning.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.
Joy Smith’s novel, “Hear Me Roar,” is a well-written suspense that captured me from the start. Jeff, the husband, hungry for money and drugs, alcohol and sex, is narcissistic on all counts. His addictions take him away from his family and walk him into serious trouble. While back home, Jan is faithfully keeping her family together believing that Jeff is the honest salesman he was hired to be. She becomes apprehensive when he doesn’t pay the bills and continually gets home late for dinner laden with alcohol. I loved her kids, Mae and her younger brother, Billy. Mae, a grown up eight year-old, catches on early about her Dad’s behavior. Jan’s new neighbors, Frank and Tina Di Giorno, are charming, kind, but aloof. Frank is always concerned about protecting his loved ones and protecting the family business, but he gets involved with a kidnapping that ensues because of Jeff’s botching and lies. A page-turner beginning to end, this book is a winner.
A rocky marriage, a mob boss, and baked goods. How can you go wrong?
I don’t usually read women’s fiction but was asked to read this one in exchange for an honest review.
Well-written, tightly-plotted, and carefully-paced, I found HEAR ME ROAR to be an engaging, suspenseful read. There were plenty of unexpected turns that kept me flipping through the pages to see what came next. Joy Smith spins a heart-wrenching tale of Jan, a wife struggling with a crumbling marriage and a mother hell-bent on protecting her children. Starting the story with Jan coming from a place of insecurity, fear, and frustration, I wasn’t sure I liked the main character at first. But Jan’s growth from beginning to end of the story was authentic and satisfying, leaving me inspired by her strength, courage, and resilience. Being a foodie, I loved all the descriptions of Jan’s Gluten-free creations and I especially appreciated the author’s ability to give distinct voices to each character, nailing the persona of Frank “The Lid” Carlucci, and the lying, cheating, Jeff—who I would have ditched much sooner.
Nice job keeping it real, Ms. Smith!
Life can give us the unexpected, but when your husband turns to living a life breaking the law what does a wife do? Jan Simmons has a lot she is dealing with. It’s hard when her husband Jeff, the breadwinner of the household, lost his job and has to take a lesser paying job. I am not sure if the loss of his job ignited this change for the worst in Jeff, but this is the path he is traveling…a bickering, cheating drunk. Jeff is a character that I found very unlikeable. His priorities never seemed to be on his family and as the story goes on he gets caught up in a web of a mess and loses all sight of being a family man.
I enjoyed the author’s style of writing, but the story starts out slow. There wasn’t anything exciting about the life of a stay-at-home mom tending to kids, baking and conversations with other stay-at-home moms. The lack-luster husband who shows signs of a second life helped give the story something to look forward to. It’s a predictable story that was drawn out too long.
The new neighbor to Charming Way, Frank Carlucci (Digiorno) brought interest to the storyline but left me wondering why did he only have one card game at his house and why did he let Jeff accrue such a debt which in turn set the stage for Jeff to veer down his path of lawlessness.
Even though the story told of mafia behavior with drug dealing and kidnapping there wasn’t really any action. The story tells of a kidnapping but doesn’t show the events. I would have liked to have read the action. There were more details shared on the mom’s day than there were on the action details that must have taken place during the kidnapping and the trouble Jeff was involved in.
Jan didn’t start out as a strong woman but she eventually saw she had to provide for her family and protect their lives from the life her husband started to bring home. I like that Jan is a survivor and a fighter. She always kept her children’s best interest in mind. Maybe her growth and strength is the reason behind the title. Jan evolves from a housewife to finding her footing to being a business owner and mom of two.
The story is well written. It shows the courage of a woman taking charge of her life and the livelihood of her family. If you enjoy reading stories of women and their growth into a strong lioness be sure not to miss Hear Me Roar.

I bought the finished book after beta reading the work in progress. The books is full of twists and turns and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I like this author because her female leads are strong, vulnerable and smart, Can't wait for the next book by Joy Smith.
